Department of English

The Department of English has been there since the inception of Vivekananda College. From offering Inter-Mediate Courses at first, it has come a long way, training undergraduate students to fare well in life. At present the department offers Honours, General and Compulsory Courses under the CBCS as well as Honours, General and Compulsory Courses to students under the NEP. The department offers Add On Courses on Gender (2021 onwards) to all the Honours students and issues certificates at the completion of the Course. The intake capacity for Honours course is 90 and selection is made strictly according to the Government rules and regulations.

Department of English is one of the premier departments that has upheld its legacy (three State and National level seminars and three publications) in every possible manner. It organizes Seminars, Workshops, Film shows, Poetry and music sessions, students’ research paper presentations, debates, Quiz contests and drama for students. Fresher’s Welcome, Farewell programmes for outgoing batches are regular events organized entirely by students. Students of the department regularly participate in both Inter and Intra college drama, quiz, debate, speech, music and sports competitions and bag covetous trophies. The department has the credit of celebrating events like Spring Festival and World Youth Skill Day and students have also taken initiatives to commemorate maestros like William Shakespeare and Bob Dylan.
