Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics, Vivekananda College, established in 1956. This is one of the most prestigious departments with a long history. Many eminent faculty members taught in this department, and their combined efforts made it a potential department in the college. Currently, we have six faculty members with strong research backgrounds.

The aim of this department is to empower students with analytical skills for flourishing in professional and academic fields through creative teaching and learning methods. Furthermore, the departmental mission is to stimulate the holistic growth of the students, enabling them to address real-world challenging issues using their mathematical thinking.

Currently, the department is offering B.Sc. Mathematics Honours (CBCS & CCF) and B.Sc. Mathematics General (CBCS & CCF) under the University of Calcutta curriculum design. Besides the regular course, an add-on course on LaTeX titled "Introduction to Latex for Beginners" was introduced in 2022. In the future, we are planning to conduct many add on courses on other topics such as Mathematica, Matlab, R, Sage-Math, and so on.

The Department of Mathematics organizes parent-teacher meetings semester-wise to counsel the students and inform the guardians about the performance and activities of their wards. If necessary some special classes are arranged in our department for slow learners. The department arranges different types of student activities annually, like quiz competition, lecture competition, educational tour, student seminar, special lecture, Mathematics Day celebration, etc., to motivate our students. Our students participate in several inter- and intra-college competitions and programmes.

At present, the department has separate classrooms for each semester's students. Our college authority provides computers for each student to practice computer programming for mathematical problems. We also have a seminar library in our department which contains more than 300 reference books.

We have strong alumni and many of them are working in various higher educational institutes in India and abroad, as well as in different government and private sectors. Some of them are pursuing their careers in Ph.D. and post-doctoral research.
