Dr. Dibyendu Raj is an Assistant Professor and Head in the Department of Biochemistry. Previously he was trained as a Post Doctoral Fellow in National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Tokyo, Japan and Doctoral Fellow in National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, Kolkata, India. He has done Bio-chemistry (Hons.) in 2006 and Biochemistry post graduation in 2008 from University of Calcutta. Dr. Raj has acquired his Ph. D. degree also from University of Calcutta and has joined Vivekananda College in 14th Feb, 2017.
His publications include many scientific papers in renowned International journals and many book chapters. He has attended many National and International symposiums and workshops and presented papers on various infectious diseases issues.
Dr. Raj has been working on various aspects of enteric parasites with special emphasis on molecular and cellular aspects of pathogenesis in Giardia, Entamoeba, different soil transmitted helminths etc. His major focus is on the molecular analyses of rRNA biogenesis and mechanism of its formation. Study the effects of oxidative stress on microaerophilic Giardia duodenalis at its cellular level, genomics, proteomics and metabolomics level. He has visited different Universities in Japan under JICA training program in 2016.
He is an invited lecturer and paper setter and examiner in several departments of Calcutta University like Department of Microbiology, Zoology, Food and Nutrition, Chemistry etc. He has achieved prestigious awards of International repute including the Best poster Award (2022) from Asian Conference on Diarrhoeal Diseases and Nutrition (ASCODD) and presented his work in several conferences.
He has conducted several seminars and workshops for UG-students. He has attended several training courses in molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, biotechnology and bioinformatics and participated in several investigations on infectious diseases and parasitic diarrhea. He is an invited reviewer of National and International journals like Current Tropical Medicine Reports.

• Working with Molecular parasitology laboratory, NICED, ICMR, Kolkata-10 in collaboration with Dr. Sandipan Ganguly.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:
Identification of different parasites by microscopy.
Culture of the parasites like Giardia (Portland 1) and Entamoeba (HM1) under in vitro condition.
Viability assays of parasites (Trypan blue, MTT).
Isolation of nucleic acids from parasites, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), RNA extraction, cDNA preparation and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, immunoblotting, gel electrophoresis.
Apoptosis study by DNA ladder assay, Hoechest stain, Tunnel assay, PI stain and Flow Cytometry analysis. Histology, Phase contrast microscopy, Fluorescence microscopy, preparation of tissue sample for transmission electron microscopy.
Separation of cytosolic and microsomal fractions of parasites, assay of malondialdehyde (MDA) & conjugated diene, Glutathione-S- tranferases assay, Superoxide dismutase assay from cytosolic fraction. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) measurement from parasites by NBT study.
Microarray analysis of gene expression.
Cloning, expression studies and polyclonal antibody preparation. Localization studies by confocal microscopy.
Spectrophotometer, Spectrofluorometer and Sequencing analysis.
2D gel electrophoresis and Mass spectrometry.
Animal handling.
Guest Lecturer in the PG-Department of Zoology, Vivekananda College.
